"I spent an hour above The Goodwin Sands in a helicopter photographing the tide slowly but surely engulfing them.

At the end of my flight the heavens started to clear and shafts of dark and light spread across the sea in a dramatic vista, with one tiny island of sand remaining. It was all that was left of the 10 miles of sand. And the grey seals had gathered to make use of it.

Seeing them there made me think of what it must have been like for sailors stranded or wartime airmen who mistakenly landed on The Sands, in damaged planes, in hope of safe haven. What would they have felt as the tide started to surge around them, pushing them back to the last highest point - to all that was left. Would rescue arrive in time? For many it did. For many, it did not."
