Collection: Sophie Hope Flavell

Sophie Hope Flavell studied at the Kent Institute of Art and Design after which she developed her own practice. She works from her studio outside Canterbury, primarily painting in oils, but occasionally using pastel and spray paint. She is inspired by big coastal skies and seas. No painting is of an exact space, but more a combination of her continuing fascination with the subject. Her distinctive use of reflective spots of light mark her unique painting style, adding an air of mystery to the works. 

 A lot of attention is given over to layers of paint, often reworking paintings over long periods of time. This often creates a dichotomy of surface textures in individual works. The employment of metallic spay paints and the vigorous reworking of surfaces creates a pleasing effect which emphasises the movement of light across the paintings. In their right environment the artworks should feel to interact with the people and spaces that they cohabit.
