Sophie Hope Flavell studied at the Kent Institute of Art and Design after which she developed her own practice. She works from her studio outside Canterbury, primarily painting in oils, but occasionally using pastel and spray paint. She is inspired by big coastal skies and seas. No painting is of an exact space, but more a combination of her continuing fascination with the subject. Her distinctive use of reflective spots of light mark her unique painting style, adding an air of mystery to the works. In this new collection two paintings see her trademark lights replaced with the hint of sailboats flitting across the sea, a clever evolution of her style. |
