Patricia Volk loves working with the directness of clay, using all the techniques at her fingertips to create one-off piece that she fires and finishes with acrylic paint. Her love of colour is drawn from classical sculpture, she says, 'We have this erroneous ideal that classical sculpture was all white, but it was actually highly coloured.' Patricia is obsessed with catching a simple form or line then enhancing it with colour. Juxtaposition of forms in her work suggest contradictions of strength and fragility, stability and precariousness - like human relationships. They also suggest other opposites, such as rest and activity giving the pieces a lively presence and a sense of individual character.
